Chapter Six
Jessica took Sunday off. She was not risking any further one-on-one encounters with Garner where she might be talked into things she really didnât want to do. A tailgate party indeed. What had she been thinking to say yes?
At least when she spoke to Mitch, she was able to do so guilt free. She hadnât done anything. She explained to him that there was no Roberto and certainly no hot tub at K &B Auto. It was just her bossâs idea of a joke.
âHa-ha,â Mitch said sourly. âSo you were there with him, alone, at ten on Saturday night. Iâm not sure how thatâs so different from being alone with Roberto.â
No hot tub? she thought. But instead she said, âLook, Mitch, you either trust me or you donât.â
Now she was quoting Garner. She was sure that wouldnât do, but on the other hand she heard amazing firmness in her voice. What she heard was take it or leave it.
Something was going dreadfully wrong with her engagement!
He must have heard it, too, because his tone suddenly changed. âOf course I trust you!â
She had managed to leave it on that note, before things deteriorated into a discussion of the Slim Gym or the house on the Hill, or before words popped out of her mouth that she could not take back.
Such as I canât marry you.
She had tried to reach her father, but James had told her he was out of town at a golf tournament. Supposedly it was first thing on his list to call her when he got back.
Her father was eighty-three years old. She thought it had been quite a number of years since he played golf, but what was she going to do? Accuse James of lying? Her father obviously wanted to avoid her right now. For some reason he didnât want her to know why he had sent her to Farewell, Virginia, or the details of how their family history was intertwined with that of the Blakes.
So she spent her Sunday holed up in her hotel room, determined not to think about her unraveling engagement, her fascination with a man who was not her fiancé or her fatherâs mysterious desire to avoid her. She indulged herself in the only guilty pleasure that could completely take her mind off how surprisingly complicated her once-predictable life had become.
She read a romance novel, reading material that quite likely would have been scorned by her intellectual peers and certainly by Mitch. It was a delightful immersion in a wonderful fantasy. But when the last page was over, she felt curiously restless.
Could that kind of emotion and tenderness exist between a man and a woman? Was it out there somewhere? Or was it all an illusion? Why did reading a book like that make her feel so utterly hopeful and so utterly lonely at the same time?
She was the pragmatic King! She was marrying Mitch Michaels, a man she respected and liked and looked up to. She was looking forward to
